Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive sweating. it can occur in any part of the body but the most commonly affected areas that people experience Hyperhidrosis are the facial region, under arm , hands and feet. The condition affects about ten percent of the population and can be mild, moderate to severe in its presentation. The condition can cause social embarrassment and often results in people avoiding certain types of clothes or specific colours . Hyperhidrosis in summer months can cause obvious sweat stains to appear on clothes and in winter the condition can also result in patients continuously feeling cold due to repeated sweating in the affected area.
Can Botox help with excessive underarm sweating?
Yes! Botox injections to the underarm area can help to eliminate underarm sweating. The treatment is painless, quick and highly effective. Botox or Botulinum Neurotoxin Type A causes the reduction in smooth muscles contraction that surrounds the sweat glands. This results in a reduction in the amount of sweat produced. Dependent on the severity of sweating a patient experiences, botox can significantly reduce sweat production and in certain cases cause a total cessation. All patients that undergo excessive sweating treatment are reviewed at the two week mark to assess the treatment response, this allows your doctor to identify any residual sweating areas. If there are residual areas present additional Botox is administered at review and this is included in your initial treatment price.
What does the treatment involve?
The first part of any treatment at Visage Clinic is a detailed consultation. Visage Clinic has three clinics, Dublin, Cork and Killarney. Dependent on your location an appointment is made for you to be assessed by one of our medical doctors. The consultation and assessment for hyperhidrosis is a vital part of the treatment pathway, a detailed history of initial presentation, family history and severity of hyperhidrosis is undertaken. A physical exam and visual inspection of the area allows for a specific dosage to be calculated dependent on the degree of sweating experienced. Your doctor will explain in detail just what exactly hyperhidrosis is and how Botox can be used to treat the condition. The treatment is virtually painless and takes approximately 5 minutes to perform. A post treatment advice sheet is provided after your treatment and a specific two week review date is set to allow for the assessment of your results.
