Between them, the doctors here at Visage Clinic have performed thousands of Botox treatments, so I sat them down and asked them to answer the most commonly asked questions people have about Botox. From the expected, to the bizzare to the sublime they answered them all! If you are thinking about getting Botox or are even curious about it, then this is a must read!
What does Botox do?
Botox or Botulinum Toxin (Type A) relaxes the muscles in the treated area. The skin stops being creased, allowing these lines to fade or disappear. For cosmetic treatments the areas treated are the lower forehead, the upper forehead and around the eyes (so called Crow’s feet).
Does Botox hurt?
In a word no! The treatments are virtually painless. It’s very rare that a patient will complain that the treatment is painful. In fact, in the thousands of treatments we’ve performed, we’ve yet to have a patient describe the treatment as painful. It’s a really small needle and often the patients are unaware of it going through the skin. If you’ve ever had your eyebrows waxed, it comparable to that.
What are the side effects?
The unwanted side effects are rare. Very rarely in a small number of cases some drooping of the eyelid or eyebrow can occur. It’s really unusual for this to happen, and it is temporary. Sometimes brusing and/or swelling can occur. A full list of all possible side effects is listed in the pre-treatment questionnaire and your doctor will be happy to answer any and all questions you have on the day you come in for your treatment or consultation.
Is Botox Safe?
Yes. Absolutely. Botox (Botulinum Toxin A) has been used as a medical product since 1978. In the early days it was used as a treatment for Migraine and muscular spasms. There is three decades of medical history and evidence to support Botox as a safe and firmly established medical product.
Will Botox make my face look frozen??
No! We are not into that at Visage Clinic. We firmly believe that Botox should and can be used to give you a natural, fresher look. Making you look less tired, more rested and younger! All those horror stories you hear and pictures you see online of celebrities who have had there faces frozen to within an inch of paralysis are people who have overdone it. And it takes years of repeated treatments with massive dosages of Botox to that.
How long does the treatment take?
We typically schedule a 30 minute slot per patient for a Botox treatment. 20 minutes of which is for the consultation. The treatment itself takes less than 10 minutes.
How long does it take for Botox to work?
Botox typically starts to ‘kick in’ after 4 or 5 days. The maximum effect is seen 14 days after the treatment. That’s why we here at Visage Clinic bring all our patients back at the two week mark for review. If any Botox is needed at this stage by way of a top-up we will do it at that stage. And that’s included in the price of the orginal treatment. It’s really important to us that our patients get the results they are looking for, that’s why we are want to see patients back after two weeks. We want to see how good our work looks!
